County Town Books is back

The original webmasters of CountyTownBooks.com describe the area around Lincolnshire, England.

Lincolnshire is the second largest county in England. It is a county of contrasts. There are the steelworks at Scunthorpe in the north, the fishing port of Grimsby, the bulb fields around Spalding, the golden sands of Skegness, hilly in the wolds (where it is still possible to drive for miles without seeing another vehicle) and the fens. There are country market towns like Louth and Sleaford where the pace of life is still relatively easy and industrial towns like Gainsborough, Grantham and Lincoln, proud of their past engineering achievements. In the south, Stamford (dubbed ‘England’s most attractive town’ by John Betjeman) is the only town in England to be sited where four counties meet. Boston, an important port since Roman times, has rich historical connections including the Pilgrim Fathers. And of course there is the ancient city of Lincoln itself, with its wonderful cathedral which inspired John Ruskin to write that it was “worth any two other cathedrals which we have got”.

John Harrison, who invented the chronometer and solved the problem of calculating longitude, came from Barrow-on-Humber and Sir Isaac Newton lived in a village half-way between Grantham and Stamford. The incredible John Smith, one of the founders of America (of Pocahantas fame), came from Willoughby and went to school at Alford, Sir John Franklin, who died trying to find the North-west Passage, was from Spilsby and Matthew Flinders, who helped to found Australia, was from Donington. The Victorian Poet Laureate, Alfred, Lord Tennyson was born and bred in the village of Somersby.

So Lincolnshire, a genuinely undiscovered county, is rich in traditions, buildings, contrasts and people.

We specialise in selling books, videos and CDs connected with Lincolnshire and the surrounding area. Many are written by Lincolnshire authors and published by small independent publishers in the county. The books range from academically important titles to the light-hearted and humorous. Often our publishers have deliberately sought out unusual and obscure subjects and many titles are difficult to find in bookshops where there is so much competition for limited shelf space..
Shortly the new webmasters will be bring you a wide range of audio books for education and entertainment.
